Haiti Mission

Here is the most recent news from Joe and Shirley Edgerton:
Church of the Resurrection hosted Haiti Methodist Church President, Gesner Paul for the Kansas East Annual Conference. I would say he missed the meals of cabrit and Haitian rice and beans as much as we do!! It was a great week and we hope he found some time to rest from his whirlwind administrative responsibilities.
We return to La gonave on July 19th then go to PaP on July 22nd for a meeting with President Paul and La gonave leadership.
Issues that bring us frequent phone calls are water wells and cisterns, education scholarships, food, especially for children and money for church related programs. The women of the EMH are planning the second Women's Conference, to be held on July 10th. We have pledged $500.00 for the 3 day meeting. I understand that Pastor Maude is working with GBGM to help them organize.
EMH Youth Rally will be held in September this year and we have pledged $500.00 to help with that 3 day meeting. Generally they host around 70 youth and young adults for worship, bible study and organization.
The 29 church youth recieving educational scholarship assistance have returned to classes. Many are in tents and other shelters. Some are living in tent cities in PaP and one medical student is preparing to "start over" in the Dominican Republic.
We have not recieved word about the cable for the well at Dent Griern but it has rained and although most private cisterns are leaking the people do have some water.
We will be sending an application for a food grant to GBGM/UMCOR soon. The food situation remains critical, especially for children on La Gonave, and we want to design a feeding program for children to help get them through until harvest.
We continue to use our Advance Special for designated giving for water projects, food distribution, education scholarships and teacher training, and for industrial development. Grants and donations are recieved by Central UMC in Lawrence Kansas.
May "the weak say, 'I am strong'" before too long, on La Gonave. Grace and Peace, Pastor Shirley
